Talk Around the Campfire
Items and Topics that are still in the planning or may be considered by the membership in the future

Time often does not allow everything to be brought up at our general or board of directors meeting.  Some items are mentioned just to think about before they are brought up at a meeting for any action.  This page will deal with such items and offer the opportunity for comments, suggestions, and solutions.

New Oil Tanks  (10-09)

  • Last year we lost we lost heat to the building because of a sediment like buildup in both of our oil tanks.

  • The tanks have been in the building since the 1960's.

  • It is felt that the tanks may need to be changed as they are nearing their life expectancy.

  • Building and Grounds Chairman, Kent Taber is pursuing the matter.

Pavilion Cooler (07-09)

  • It is old and will eventually need replacing

  • It is used only a few times a year.

  • When it starts the voltage drops to 97vac at the pavilion.

  • A new cooler can cost in access of $3,500, we do not have the use to support spending that much.

  • A replacement might be available through a soda or beer company at a reasonable price  Feel free to check this out as others are.

  • Another alternative and my favorite (C Parker) is to get a small enclosed utility trailer and build a cooler/ freezer. Have it built to run off electricity, so house power or a generator (6,000 watt) could be used.  We have a member that has built a couple of the coolers / freezers.  Using new parts cost estimate $3,000 - $4,000.  With used parts cost would be cheaper.  Advantages;  it is portable, could be used at pavilion, clubhouse, and on leased lands.  The unit could be used by membership for family picnics, parties.  Unit could be used by various organizations such as boy scouts, fire departments, and other charitable organizations.  Unit could be rented to for profit organizations.  It would be used more than three or four times a year.  We could even promote the MRC and or sporting issues by putting signs on the unit.

Pole Barn Heaving (07-09)

  • Part of two sides of the building have heaved in the past years.

  • Corrective measures have not corrected the problem (French Drain)

  • Floor has also cracked

  • How to stop further Damage

  • I do not see the floor as an immediate problem as long as it does not get worse (CP)

  • Heating the building to prevent frost is not feasible. (AP)

  • Would cutting the poles on the sides that are heaving allow that side(s) to lower to the proper level (many)

  • Is the problem caused by lack of weight allowing to be lifted by frost?

  • Would putting insulation below ground around the building, out 10ft keep the ground from freezing near the building and keep the building from heaving. (below 4 ft the earths temperature stays well above freezing) (CP)

1994 100 Year Anniversary Year Book (7-09)

A couple of  weeks ago I got a call from a Gary Allen who's great uncle, Leslie Harris was a member of the Mad River Club before his death in 1975.  In fact he died of a heart attacked while on his way to a Mad River Club Meeting.  He asked if we had any information about his membership,  I checked the anniversary yearbook and found that he was President of the Club from 1950 - 1959.  I believe but have not been able to verify it yet that he also was active with the Oswego County Federation.  There are two pictures of him at the club house. One has him sitting on a stump in the woods with gun in hand.  The other is a group picture with him in it.  I hope to meet with Gary in the Future to learn more about his  great Uncle Leslie Harris.
All this got me to thinking about the value of the 1994 Anniversary Year Book. Copies are becoming hard to come by.  I would like to see about getting a copy of the book put on a computer PDF file.  This would allow for a better copy to be kept and excerpts to be printed if necessary.  Articles form book could also be used easily for future books.
